The Australian Early Years Learning Framework vision is that:
All children have the best start in life to create a better future for themselves and for the nation.
The curriculum at the Early Learning Centre at VISS is based on the Australian Early Years Learning Framework. The curriculum ensures that children in the Early Learning Centre experience quality teaching and learning. We recognise the importance of the partnership with families, children’s first and most influential educators. At the ELC we provide children with opportunities to maximise their potential and develop a foundation for future success in learning.
At VISS we believe childhood is about:
• Belonging (being connected to family, culture, community, place)
• Being (to be, to seek, and make meaning of the world)
• Becoming (shaping new understandings, identities, capacities and relationships).
Children are different in every way, therefore develop at different rates, some may acquire skills before others. As children develop at their own pace, the ELC provides activities that are enriching while they are engaged in many life-long learning experiences including dramatic play which helps to develop their creativity and imagination.
At the beginning of the year the children learn about the school’s environment, rules and routines.
They also learn how to be independent and do things for themselves, for example, washing their hands, putting on their art smocks when painting and being aware of space around them when using play equipment. The Australian Framework has a specific emphasis on play-based learning and recognises the importance of communication and language, including early literacy and numeracy as well as social and emotional development.
We encourage children to explore, solve problems, communicate, think, create and construct and use their judgment to support children’s learning and development. This occurs through a combination of child-led and adult-led developmental play-based learning, as well as active teacher led learning.
The ELC team develops Individual Learning Goals (ILG) for all our students and student reports, that our aligned with our teaching and learning program.
