Leadership & Governance
Principal Dr. Dawn Stoner leads The School of Research Science US High School L.L.C, having assumed the top role in August 2024 after joining the school for the 2022–23 academic year as Head of School and Vice Principal. Originally from Atlanta, Georgia, Dr. Stoner previously served as Assistant Head of Secondary at Emirates National Schools for four years, bringing direct experience of the UAE school system. While her trajectory through the school suggests growing institutional familiarity, her formal appointment as Principal is recent, and the leadership team itself is described by DSIB inspectors as new — a factor that has bearing on the school's current performance trajectory.
The 2023–24 DSIB inspection rated leadership effectiveness as Acceptable and, more critically, governance as Weak — the lowest rating awarded in this cycle. Inspectors found that the governing board lacks adequate stakeholder representation and had not sought KHDA approval for plans as required by statute. These are compliance failures that go beyond operational shortcomings, and they represent a significant concern for parents evaluating the school's institutional accountability. The inspection report calls explicitly for the governing body to be restructured to meet regulatory requirements.
Staff instability compounds the leadership picture. Inspectors noted that almost half of all teaching staff were new to the school at the start of the 2023–24 academic year — a level of turnover described as disrupting both continuity and students' trust in their learning environment. This is flagged as a key area for improvement. With 53 teachers serving 830 students, the school operates at a student-to-teacher ratio of 1:16, which is higher than the Dubai-wide average of 1:13.6 across all schools with available data — meaning each teacher carries a comparatively heavier load among American curriculum schools in Dubai. There is only one teaching assistant on staff, which is notably limited given that 130 students of determination are enrolled.
Teaching quality was rated Acceptable by DSIB. Inspectors found that most teachers demonstrate secure subject knowledge but are less consistent in understanding how students learn best. Differentiation is uneven, written feedback is variable, and high-quality questioning occurs only in the better lessons. The largest nationality group among teachers is American, which aligns with the school's US curriculum identity, but qualification data are not disclosed in available sources. [MISSING: staff qualification percentage, e.g. proportion holding Masters or above]
On community engagement, parents and the community were rated Acceptable. Student voice mechanisms are in place — student ambassadors and committees present opinions to leaders — and a designated governing board member oversees wellbeing and inclusion. Wellbeing provision overall was rated Good, with leaders sharing a clear vision and implementing data-driven initiatives in response to student and staff surveys. The school's founding connection to the established School of Research Science, which has operated since 1998, provides some reputational continuity, and the school's values framework — centred on inquiry, excellence, diversity and community — reflects a coherent leadership philosophy. However, translating that vision into consistently strong classroom outcomes and stable staffing remains the central challenge facing the current leadership team.
