The Executive Summary

AL KHUBAIRAT COMMUNITY SCHOOL (THE BRITISH SCHOOL AL KHUBAIRAT) Abu Dhabi occupies a singular position in the capital's education landscape: it is the most established British curriculum school in Abu Dhabi, founded in 1968 and now serving over 2,000 students from nursery through to Year 13 in the residential heart of Al Mushrif. Its ADEK rating Outstanding - confirmed by ADEK inspectors in November 2025 - is not a recent acquisition but a sustained achievement, with the school maintaining this top rating since 2018-19. The British curriculum Abu Dhabi framework here runs from Early Years Foundation Stage all the way through IGCSEs and A-Levels, and the school's exam results consistently place it among the top two British curriculum schools in the emirate: 58% A*-A at A-Level and 66% grades 9-7 (A*-A equivalent) at GCSE in the most recent published cycle. Crucially, BSAK operates as a not-for-profit institution, meaning every dirham of fee income is reinvested into the school - a structural advantage that separates it from most Abu Dhabi private schools fees competitors. For families making a multi-year, AED 300K+ education investment, this matters enormously. The school fees Abu Dhabi range of AED 45,560 to AED 74,560 per annum places BSAK in the premium tier, but given the Outstanding rating, the depth of co-curricular provision, and the university destinations alumni achieve, the value proposition is among the strongest in the Al Mushrif schools cluster.

BSAK is an exceptional school which develops the whole child - through high academic challenge, excellent morals and an extensive co-curricular provision. The sense of community here is unlike anything we experienced elsewhere.

Academic Framework & Learning Style

BSAK delivers a full British curriculum Abu Dhabi pathway - from the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) in Nursery and Reception, through the National Curriculum for England in Primary and Lower Secondary, to IGCSE in Years 10-11 and A-Levels (plus BTEC Level 3 equivalents) in the Sixth Form. This is the most complete British curriculum pathway available in the emirate, and the school's academic results validate the model comprehensively. In the most recent published exam cycle, A-Level results showed 58% A*-A grades, with 100% pass rate across all entries. BTEC results were even more striking: 100% Distinction*/Distinction across all entries - a benchmark that very few schools anywhere achieve. At GCSE, 66% of entries were awarded grades 9-7 (A*-A equivalent), with 96% achieving grade 4 and above (the standard pass benchmark). These are not cherry-picked years; the school's historical results show consistent top-two performance in Abu Dhabi across multiple cycles. The curriculum breadth at BSAK is genuinely exceptional. At GCSE, students choose from 22 subject options, including less conventional choices such as Food Technology and Nutrition, Media Studies, and Fashion and Textiles alongside the full suite of traditional academic subjects. At Sixth Form, 23 A-Level options are available alongside BTEC Level 3 Diplomas in Sport, Business Studies, Engineering, and - from 2024 - E-Sports. The school claims, with credibility, to offer the largest range of subject choices in Abu Dhabi. In Primary, the school has adopted the CUSP curriculum (a knowledge-rich, sequenced approach), which student testimonials suggest has made learning more engaging and coherent. The pedagogical approach across the school is inquiry-based and student-centred, with ADEK 2025 inspectors confirming that learning skills are Outstanding across all phases - including strong independence, collaboration, and real-world application skills. The ADEK Irtiqa 2025 inspection found English attainment Outstanding in Phases 2, 3, and 4, with progress Outstanding across all phases. Mathematics attainment and progress are similarly Outstanding from Phase 2 onwards. Science attainment and progress are Outstanding across every single phase - a remarkable consistency. The school's PISA 2022 scores provide independent international validation: 532 in reading literacy (above the international average of 476), 541 in mathematical literacy (above the international average of 472), and 546 in science literacy (above the international average of 485) - all exceeding school targets. TIMSS 2023 results showed Year 5 mathematics at 606 (international average: 503) and Year 5 science at 621 (international average: 494). University destinations include the most academically selective institutions globally, with alumni attending universities such as Harvard, Stanford, Oxford, and leading Russell Group institutions. The school explicitly states its alumni go on to the most academically selective universities, and the historical record of individual student placements confirms this is not marketing hyperbole. Academic support provision is robust. The school identifies and supports 157 students of determination (as per the ADEK 2025 report), with ADEK confirming care and support are Outstanding across all phases. Gifted and Talented students are also tracked, with differentiated provision embedded in curriculum planning. EAL support is available given the school's diverse 50-nationality student body. Homework and assessment philosophy is aligned with the National Curriculum for England, with robust moderation processes in core subjects - though ADEK has recommended extending these moderation processes to non-core subjects, a fair observation. The school uses GL Progress Tests and internal data systematically to track individual student progress, and the ADEK 2025 report confirms that assessment data is used skillfully to inform teaching and curriculum planning.

Extracurricular Activities (ECAs)

BSAK's co-curricular programme is one of the most extensive of any school in Abu Dhabi, and it is a genuine differentiator rather than a marketing claim. The school runs over 100 clubs and activities each term, spanning academic enrichment, recreational pursuits, instrumental music, performing arts, and competitive sport. Crucially, over 85% of secondary students participate in at least one after-school activity per week - a participation rate that reflects a genuine culture of engagement rather than a passive programme that exists on paper. Activities range from invitation-only and trials-based groups to open clubs, ensuring both elite performers and curious beginners find their place. In sport, BSAK has positioned itself as a centre of sporting excellence for the region. The school offers specialist coaching in rugby, netball, cricket, and football, with coaches recruited from the UK. The school competes in the BSME (British Schools of the Middle East) tournaments across multiple sports, with recent highlights including gold medals in U15 football at a Cranleigh-hosted tournament. The U15 netball team competed in the 2026 BSME Netball Tournament, demonstrating the school's commitment to regional competitive sport at multiple age groups. Competitive fixtures, inter-house competitions, and development pathways ensure sport is structured and progressive rather than purely recreational. In the performing arts, BSAK describes itself as a centre of excellence for music and performing arts in the region - a claim backed by tangible evidence. The school offers instrumental tuition in more than 20 instruments plus voice coaching, and runs numerous ensemble and choral groups that meet weekly, including the Al Khubairat Choral Society and Community Strings, which performed Fauré's Requiem to a public audience in 2024. The school collaborates with leading musicians and orchestras visiting Abu Dhabi throughout the year. Drama and art are similarly prominent, with dedicated facilities and annual productions. Enrichment opportunities extend well beyond campus. The school runs Trips and Visits throughout the academic year, including international expeditions and cultural visits. The Duke of Edinburgh Award programme is offered, providing structured challenge across physical, skill, and volunteering components - a significant differentiator for university applications. Model United Nations (MUN) is another flagship programme, developing critical thinking, public speaking, and global awareness. Students also participated in the 2026 History Bee and Bowl tournament in Dubai, competing against 31 teams from across the UAE. Community service and social responsibility are embedded through student-led initiatives, and the ADEK 2025 report confirms that students' social responsibility and innovation skills are Outstanding across all phases - students are described as proactive, innovative, and creative in contributing to the local community.

Pastoral Care & Well-being

Pastoral care at BSAK is one of the school's most consistently praised dimensions, and the ADEK 2025 Irtiqa report provides unambiguous confirmation: health and safety, including safeguarding, is rated Outstanding across all phases, as is care and support across all phases. The school maintains rigorous child protection procedures with regular and vigilant monitoring, and ADEK inspectors describe it as maintaining an extremely safe environment for students. Teachers are described as exceptionally aware of students' individual social, physical, emotional, and academic needs - a level of attentiveness that goes beyond compliance. The school operates a House system that provides students with a sense of belonging and identity within the larger community of over 2,000 students. Houses compete across academic, sporting, and cultural events throughout the year, fostering inter-year relationships and school spirit. Student leadership is actively developed: prefect programmes, house leadership roles, class representatives, and subject-specific ambassador programmes (such as the Chemistry Ambassadors who organised Women in Science Week in 2026) give students meaningful agency and responsibility. The school's wellbeing provision includes a dedicated focus on executive functioning and neurodiversity, with BSAK publishing specialist guidance for families during its annual Neurodiversity Week - evidence of a school that takes mental health and cognitive diversity seriously rather than treating it as a compliance checkbox. Anti-bullying frameworks and student welfare policies are embedded in the school's ethos. The school's values - Empathy and Care; Respect and Inclusion; Honesty and Integrity; Endeavour and Resilience - are not merely displayed on walls but, according to ADEK inspectors, genuinely reflected in student behaviour. Students across all phases are described as demonstrating extremely positive attitudes, exemplary behaviour, and courteous yet friendly relationships. Parent communication is facilitated through a dedicated Parent Portal, regular reporting, and structured parent engagement events. The school actively involves parents as partners in their children's learning, including providing guidance on reading strategies, book choices, and international assessment preparation - reducing unnecessary stress by clarifying what the school's own teaching already covers. The ADEK 2025 report rates Parents and the Community as Outstanding under the leadership and management standard.

The sense of community created at BSAK is like no other. Every member is able to express their uniqueness - BSAK is immensely welcoming, respectful and diverse. I am proud to call myself a member of this school.

Campus & Facilities

The British School Al Khubairat occupies a well-established campus at Building 25, Um Salamah Street, Al Mushrif Area, Abu Dhabi - one of the most desirable residential districts in the capital, with easy access from Khalidiyah, Bateen, and the wider central Abu Dhabi corridor. The campus has been continuously developed and modernised over more than five decades, with the school's not-for-profit structure ensuring all surpluses are reinvested into facilities rather than distributed as profit. This financial discipline is visible in the quality of what the campus offers. Key facilities include a purpose-built theatre seating up to 340 people, opened in 2005, which hosts drama productions, concerts, and guest performances. A large auditorium seating up to 600 people serves assemblies, major events, and community gatherings. For sport, the campus features a full-size synthetic turf pitch on-site, plus exclusive use of a high-quality grass pitch adjacent to the school - a facility that supports the school's competitive sports programmes at the level required for BSME regional tournaments. The school has two well-equipped libraries: the Phase 2 (Primary) library is particularly impressive, featuring soft seating, a dedicated storytelling 'throne', and a collection of over 25,000 books, with adventure and exploration spaces that make reading genuinely inviting. The secondary library supports research, borrowing, and independent study. The Science and Innovation Centre, opened in the 2022-23 academic year, represents the most significant recent capital investment. Built to enable cutting-edge learning in STEAM subjects - Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics - it provides the laboratory and maker-space infrastructure that modern science education demands. The Foundation Stage was comprehensively redeveloped and upgraded in 2012. Most recently, in February 2026, the school opened a new Primary playground featuring nature and water play, activity panels, and an adventure trail - evidence that facility investment is ongoing rather than historical. Technology infrastructure supports digital learning across the school, with the ADEK 2025 report confirming that curriculum design and implementation are Outstanding, supported by effective use of resources. The campus location in Al Mushrif places it within one of Abu Dhabi's most established expatriate residential communities, with strong transport links and a school bus service available (route coverage subject to demand).

Teaching & Learning Quality

Teaching quality at BSAK is the engine behind its sustained Outstanding rating, and the ADEK 2025 Irtiqa report is unequivocal: teaching for effective learning is rated Outstanding across all four phases (KG, Cycle 1, Cycle 2, Cycle 3), as is assessment. This is a significant improvement from the previous inspection, where Phase 3 (Years 7-9) was rated Very Good - inspectors note the improvement reflects a strong focus on strengthening differentiation and student-led learning, alongside robust and consistent assessment processes. The school employs 156 teachers and 103 teaching assistants - a teaching assistant corps that is proportionally very large and enables meaningful small-group and individual support. The primary nationalities of teaching staff are United Kingdom, Egypt, and Ireland, reflecting a predominantly UK-trained workforce with international experience. The school's admissions page references the Headmaster's explicit commitment to providing the best teachers in a not-for-profit environment, and the stability of the leadership team over more than a decade has allowed a consistent pedagogical culture to develop. Teacher-to-student ratios are approximately 1:10 in the Foundation Stage and 1:13 through the remainder of the school - ratios that enable personalised attention at a level that many larger schools cannot match. Professional development is systematic and ongoing. The ADEK 2025 report highlights that several teachers have been selected for specialised ADEK training in international assessment literacy, and these teachers play a key role in disseminating insights across year groups - creating a genuine culture of shared professional learning rather than siloed CPD. This investment has sharpened teachers' approach to planning, questioning, feedback, and scaffolding. Differentiation and personalised learning are embedded: the ADEK report confirms that curriculum adaptation is Outstanding across all phases, with thoughtful adjustments informed by accurate assessment data ensuring the curriculum meets the needs of all student groups. The use of technology in teaching is well-integrated, with digital resources deployed purposefully across departments. One area for continued development flagged by ADEK: the use of challenging questioning in Arabic-medium subjects to promote critical thinking - a nuance that reflects the school's English-medium strength rather than any weakness in its core British curriculum delivery.

Leadership & Management

BSAK is led by Headmaster Mark Leppard MBE, who joined the school in 2014 after seven years as Principal of Doha College - itself shortlisted for Best International School in the UK Independent School Awards. Mr. Leppard was awarded the Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) during his tenure at Doha College, a recognition of his contribution to British education overseas. His arrival at BSAK brought a period of sustained stability after a period of leadership transition, and more than a decade later, the results speak clearly: the school has moved from Very Good to Outstanding under his stewardship and has maintained that rating through two successive ADEK inspections. The ADEK 2025 Irtiqa report rates the effectiveness of leadership as Outstanding, school self-evaluation and improvement planning as Outstanding (an improvement from Very Good in the previous cycle), governance as Outstanding, and management, staffing, facilities and resources as Outstanding - a clean sweep across all leadership and management indicators. Inspectors describe leaders at all levels, including governors, as maintaining a consistent and relentless focus on improvement, with innovative leaders setting ambitious, aspirational goals grounded in a shared vision and commitment to excellence. The school is governed by a Board of Governors that rigorously holds leaders accountable and ensures facilities and resources are of the highest quality. BSAK operates as a not-for-profit community school, with governance structured to serve the school community rather than external shareholders - a model that aligns incentives directly with educational outcomes. The school's vision - Building on our unique local heritage, we will provide a world-class British education, inspiring all our students to exceed expectations - is not merely aspirational language; the ADEK inspection data confirms it is operationally delivered. Parent communication is facilitated through a dedicated Parent Portal, regular detailed reporting on student progress, and structured engagement events. The ADEK 2025 report specifically notes that the school is highly successful in engaging parents as partners in their children's learning, supported by effective communication. Self-evaluation is described as increasingly accurate, supported by a strong evidence base, and effectively informing school improvement planning.

ADEK Inspection Results (Irtiqa - Decoded)

The ADEK Irtiqa inspection conducted 17-20 November 2025 confirmed BSAK's Overall Rating: Outstanding - the highest rating available under the ADEK framework. This is the school's second consecutive Outstanding rating, having first achieved it in the 2018-19 inspection cycle. The 2025 report represents a meaningful step forward from the 2023 inspection: multiple indicators that were previously rated Very Good have been elevated to Outstanding, and no indicators have declined in the English-medium core. In plain English, what does the 2025 inspection tell parents? English-medium achievement is exceptional: English, Mathematics, and Science attainment and progress are Outstanding across all phases. Learning skills are Outstanding across all phases. Teaching, assessment, and curriculum provision are Outstanding across all phases. Pastoral care, safeguarding, and student wellbeing are Outstanding across all phases. Leadership and management - including governance, self-evaluation, and parent engagement - are Outstanding across all indicators. This is as clean an inspection outcome as a school can achieve. The areas of genuine improvement since 2023 are notable: Phase 3 (Years 7-9) teaching improved from Very Good to Outstanding; self-evaluation and improvement planning improved from Very Good to Outstanding; learning skills in Phase 3 improved from Very Good to Outstanding. These are not marginal refinements - they represent substantive pedagogical development in the secondary years. The growth areas identified by ADEK are concentrated in Arabic-medium subjects and represent the school's most significant ongoing challenge. Arabic as a first language attainment in Phase 3 is rated Good (down from previous cycles in some measures), and Islamic Education attainment in Phase 3 is Good (with ABT external data showing Acceptable in Phase 3). These are not surprising findings for a school whose student body is predominantly English-speaking and whose primary identity is British curriculum; however, they are genuine areas where the school must continue to invest. ADEK also recommends extending robust moderation processes to non-core subjects - a reasonable structural improvement that the school's leadership has the capacity to deliver. For most families choosing BSAK, the Arabic-medium performance gap is a known characteristic of the school's profile rather than a hidden weakness.
English-Medium Achievement: Exceptional Across All Phases
English, Mathematics, and Science attainment and progress are all rated Outstanding across every phase of the school (KG through Cycle 3). PISA 2022 scores of 532 (reading), 541 (maths), and 546 (science) all exceed international averages and school targets, providing independent international validation of classroom performance.
Teaching, Assessment & Curriculum: Outstanding Across the Board
Teaching for effective learning and assessment are Outstanding across all four phases - an improvement from the 2023 inspection in Phase 3. Curriculum design, implementation, and adaptation are Outstanding across all phases. ADEK inspectors specifically highlight differentiation, student-led learning, and skillful use of assessment data as key strengths.
Leadership, Safeguarding & Community: A Complete Outstanding Sweep
All six leadership and management indicators are rated Outstanding, including governance, self-evaluation (improved from Very Good), and parent engagement. Health and safety including safeguarding is Outstanding across all phases. The school is described as maintaining an extremely safe, inclusive, and nurturing environment with an embedded culture of safeguarding.
Arabic-Medium Subjects: Persistent Performance Gap

Arabic as a first language attainment in Phase 3 shows a downward trajectory in ABT external data (Acceptable in 2024/25). Islamic Education attainment in Phase 3 is Good internally but Acceptable in ABT external assessments. ADEK recommends improving extended writing coherence, strengthening Qur'anic recitation accuracy, and deepening UAE cultural engagement across phases. For a school whose student body is predominantly English-speaking, this gap is structural but must be actively managed.

TIMSS Phase 3 Performance & Moderation Processes

TIMSS 2023 Year 9 mathematics (548) and science (566) scores fell below school targets of 601 and 606 respectively, though both remain well above international averages. ADEK also recommends extending robust moderation processes currently in place for core subjects to include non-core subjects, and developing middle leaders' confidence in using the inspection framework to make judgements about teaching and learning quality.

Fees & Value for Money

The British School Al Khubairat (BSAK) offers a British curriculum education in Abu Dhabi, with tuition fees quoted in AED and approved by ADEK for the 2025/26 academic year. Fees range from AED 45,560 per annum for Nursery (FS1 Core Day) through to AED 74,560 per annum for Sixth Form students in Years 12 and 13. The fee structure reflects the school's position as one of Abu Dhabi's most established British schools, with a heritage spanning decades and a strong record of academic achievement at IGCSE and A-Level.

Fees are payable across three terms — Autumn, Spring, and Summer — making it straightforward for families to plan their finances on a termly basis. Notably, there are no additional charges for textbooks and materials, which represents a meaningful saving compared to many comparable schools. However, the cost of external examinations (such as IGCSEs and A-Levels) is the sole responsibility of parents and guardians, and families should budget accordingly for students in Years 10 through 13.

BSAK accepts payment via bank transfer, with full banking details provided including IBAN and SWIFT code for telegraphic transfers through Standard Chartered Bank. The school also publishes a formal Fees Policy and makes ADEK-approved fee schedules publicly available, demonstrating a commitment to transparency. Families are encouraged to review the published Exam Fees schedule for 2024/25 to understand the costs associated with external qualifications.

The Final Verdict: Who Is This School For?

After reviewing the full evidence base - ADEK Irtiqa 2025 inspection findings, published exam results, curriculum breadth, facilities, and the school's 57-year track record - our editorial verdict is clear: The British School Al Khubairat is the benchmark British curriculum school in Abu Dhabi, and for the right family, it is genuinely difficult to improve upon. The combination of Outstanding ADEK rating, sustained top-two exam results, not-for-profit governance, 100+ co-curricular activities, and a deeply embedded school community creates a proposition that no other British curriculum school in the emirate currently matches in totality. The school is best suited to academically motivated students who thrive in a structured, high-expectation British curriculum environment and whose families value a rich co-curricular life alongside strong academic outcomes. It is particularly compelling for families intending to return to the UK or apply to UK universities, given the A-Level pathway and the school's track record of university placements at Russell Group and elite international institutions. The not-for-profit structure also matters: families can be confident that fee increases reflect genuine cost pressures rather than profit extraction, and that capital investment serves students rather than shareholders. The school is not ideal for families seeking an IB pathway - BSAK is firmly committed to the British curriculum and there is no IB option. Families whose children require intensive Arabic language development or who prioritise Islamic Studies performance may find the school's acknowledged gap in Arabic-medium subjects a concern, particularly at secondary level. And for families where school fees represent a significant financial stretch, the absence of a publicised sibling discount or bursary scheme means BSAK's premium pricing is largely non-negotiable. Admissions are highly competitive - the school operates extensive waiting lists for most year groups from Reception to Year 10, and submitting an application does not guarantee a place. Families should engage with the admissions team early and realistically manage expectations about availability.

THE “RIGHT FIT”

Academically ambitious students aged 3-18 from English-speaking families who want the strongest British curriculum pathway in Abu Dhabi, a rich co-curricular life, and a stable, not-for-profit school community with Outstanding ADEK credentials and a clear route to top UK and global universities.

THE “WRONG FIT”

Families seeking an IB Diploma pathway, those who require intensive Arabic language development or prioritise Islamic Studies performance, or families for whom the AED 45K-74K fee range is a significant financial stretch with no available relief mechanisms.

Stable school, quality teachers, excellent curriculum, good facilities, genuine sense of community - it ticks every box for us. The only thing I'd add is an IB option, but for the British curriculum, it really is the best in Abu Dhabi.
