Horizons English School delivers the National Curriculum for England across EYFS, Key Stage 1, and Key Stage 2 — spanning FS1 through Year 6 for children aged 3 to 11. As a primary-only school, HES does not offer GCSE or A-Level pathways on campus; however, its membership of the Cognita group provides structured progression routes into respected British secondary schools including RGS Guildford Dubai, Repton Dubai, Repton Al Barsha, and Horizon International School. A further pathway will open with Horizon English School Town Square, an all-through campus from FS1 to Year 13 due to launch in September 2027.
Academic performance at HES is measurably strong across international benchmarks. The school ranks among the top 10 high-performing schools in TIMSS results, with above 80% of students outperforming on International Benchmark tests. In Early Years, 90% of students achieve Good Level of Development (GLD) — a headline indicator of school readiness. The school also exceeded its PIRLS target with an overall score well over 600, and over 90% of students pass the international Year 1 Phonics screening test. The 2023–2024 KHDA inspection confirmed Outstanding attainment and progress in English, mathematics, and science across both Foundation Stage and Primary — the highest possible judgement in every core subject. Inspectors noted that high-attaining students in upper primary are reaching standards normally associated with early secondary education.
Specialist programs add meaningful breadth. HES operates a well-regarded SEN and Inclusion programme supporting approximately 117 students of determination — a figure that reflects genuine commitment rather than selective intake. A Gifted and Talented strand challenges higher-attaining pupils, while a dedicated STEMM program (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Moral Education) is embedded across the school, anchored by a purpose-built STEMM room. Compulsory subjects include Arabic, French, Islamic Studies for Muslim pupils, and Moral, Social and Cultural Studies (MSCS) aligned to UAE Ministry of Education requirements. Every child in Years 3–6 is issued an iPad Pro device, and computing is introduced as a specialist subject earlier than most comparable schools in Dubai.
In context, HES sits among a competitive peer group. Dubai has 105 British curriculum schools — the largest curriculum segment in the city — yet only 18 of Dubai's 23 Outstanding-rated schools follow the British curriculum, making Outstanding a genuinely selective distinction. HES has held the KHDA Outstanding rating continuously since 2018–19 and was independently rated Outstanding by British Schools Overseas (BSO), providing dual external validation of its academic quality. Both Wellbeing and Inclusion were rated Outstanding as KHDA Dubai Focus Areas in the most recent inspection cycle.
Inspectors did identify areas requiring attention. The two most significant recommendations concern Islamic Education and Arabic: inspectors called on leaders to raise teacher expectations in both subjects, accelerate student progress, and ensure full compliance with Ministry of Education curriculum requirements. A specific development point flagged the need to raise reading literacy standards among Emirati students. Within mathematics, inspectors noted that while reasoning skills are well developed, opportunities for students to explore mathematical concepts independently are limited — a gap relative to the school's otherwise high standards. Online safety understanding, particularly in Years 5 and 6, was also identified as an area for further development. These are targeted, subject-specific concerns rather than systemic weaknesses, but parents of Muslim pupils and Emirati families should weigh them carefully.
