Curriculum & Academics
Future International Academy follows the American curriculum, aligned to US Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts and Mathematics and California Common Core curriculum standards for other subjects. The school spans Kindergarten through Grade 12, organised into KG, Cycle 1 (Grades 1–4), Cycle 2 (Grades 5–8), and Cycle 3 (Grades 9–12), culminating in an American High School Diploma. Graduation requirements are notably comprehensive: students must achieve a combined SAT Math/English score of 440, minimum IELTS 5.5 or TOEFL 61 IBT, and hold an EMSAT Certificate — positioning graduates for both UAE and international university entry. FIA is one of 42 American curriculum schools in the Abu Dhabi/UAE private school landscape, and holds Cognia (formerly AdvancED) accreditation, a distinction that underpins its commitment to continuous institutional improvement.
The school's most distinctive academic offering is its suite of Advanced Placement (AP) courses, spanning AP Chemistry, AP Physics, AP Biology, AP Calculus, AP Computer Science A, and AP Computer Science Principles — college-level programmes that provide high school students with university-preparatory rigour. Languages of instruction are English and Arabic, with additional language options including French and Filipino, the latter reflecting the school's diverse community. The Special Education department provides SEN provision through a full-time SENCO and specialist staff, serving 37 Students of Determination currently enrolled. Digital learning is embedded through platforms including Achieve 3000 for English reading and Kamkalima for Arabic literacy, while a structured phonics programme supports foundational reading in KG and lower Cycle 1.
On international assessments, the picture is mixed but contains genuine highlights. In TIMSS 2023, FIA students performed above international averages in three of four categories: Grade 4 Mathematics scored 554 against an international average of 503; Grade 8 Mathematics scored 496 against an average of 478; and Grade 4 Science scored 537 against an average of 494. Grade 8 Science, at 476, fell marginally below the international average of 478. In PISA 2022, however, 15-year-old students scored 384 in reading, 408 in mathematics, and 429 in science — all below both the school's own targets and PISA international averages. PIRLS 2021 placed Grade 4 students at 532, within the intermediate international benchmark range. In Arabic, ACER-IBT results were Outstanding in Phases 3 and 4, a notable strength. The 2024–25 ADEK inspection rated the school Good — a rating it has held consistently since at least 2021–22, placing it among the 22 of 42 American curriculum schools in the UAE rated Good by inspectors.
The ADEK inspection identified several areas requiring attention. MAP Spring 2024–25 results showed Weak attainment in Phases 2 and 3 across English, Mathematics, and Science — a persistent trend across multiple years. Inspectors flagged the need to reduce teacher-led instruction in favour of inquiry-based learning, improve differentiation for both high and low attainers, and strengthen the quality of written feedback and peer-assessment practices. Extended independent writing skills were noted as underdeveloped across all phases in both English and Arabic. The school also lacks a coherent whole-school strategy for TIMSS, PISA, and PIRLS preparation with clear accountability milestones — a gap that likely contributes to the divergence between strong TIMSS primary results and weaker PISA outcomes for older students. Compared to peer American curriculum schools, FIA's absence of a gifted and talented programme and [MISSING: university destination data] limit a full competitive assessment, though its AP course breadth and dual-language graduation requirements represent meaningful differentiators in the Al Ain market.
