Syllabi and Curriculum

The main syllabus is based on the EYFS Curriculum and National Curriculum for England using resources produced in the U.K. taking into account UAE cultural and geographical settings. Islamic Studies, U.A.E. Social Studies and Arabic are taught according to the UAE Ministry of Education guidelines, books and syllabi.

In KG1 and KG2 we base our curriculum on the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum of the UK, which has been designed for children between the ages of 3 and 5. Most of the activities at this age are play-based, as we believe that it is through play that children learn best. The curriculum in KG1 and KG2 is designed to ignite children’s curiosity and enthusiasm for learning and to build their capacity to learn, form relationships and thrive.

Year 1 marks the beginning of more formal education. Students will be reading, writing, counting, adding, subtracting, exploring and extending what they know about themselves and the world.

Almost without exception our students speak English as their second language, however the language of communication throughout school is English. We believe that the rapid acquisition of English is of great importance, so we place heavy emphasis on teaching children correct English, beginning with their first days in KG1.

Throughout the Primary School, Arabic and Islamic Studies form an important role of our curriculum. Students have daily Arabic lessons and several Islamic Studies lessons in the week, in addition to Social Studies.

A variety of organisational strategies and teaching techniques will operate within each classroom. On occasions it will be appropriate for whole class teaching and on others mixed ability or friendship groups will operate. We will sometimes group children by ability and also set special programmes to cater for the learning needs of individual children.

Al Rabeeh School is trialling ‘setting’ in core subjects of English and Mathematics, in some year groups. This enables students to develop and progress according to their individual needs.

The curriculum is planned in detail by class teachers and grade leaders to ensure work is well matched to meet the learning needs of the children. Every child is challenged to reach their full potential. Whole school theme days are held over the year e.g. history days, culture and creative arts days, book week, book fairs, science, environment and maths days. Al Rabeeh School holds annual charity events and other fundraising events.

All students are assessed on a regular basis to monitor progress towards meeting the standards required for entry into the next phase of their education. UK standardised assessments are now being used to help support reporting and measure progress and attainment.
