Leadership & Governance
Al Ain British Academy is operated by Aldar Education (Aldar Academies), one of Abu Dhabi's most prominent school groups, and is governed by a School Governance Group that inspectors rated Outstanding in the 2021–22 ADEK Irtiqaa evaluation — the highest possible grade. Every sub-indicator under Leadership and Management — effectiveness of leadership, self-evaluation and improvement, partnerships with parents, governance, and management — was individually rated Outstanding, a clean sweep that is uncommon even among the strongest schools in the emirate.
The school is led by Principal Ian Pugh, who has been working in education since 2004 and brings over ten years of senior leadership experience across the UK and UAE. He joined AABA's Senior Leadership Team in 2019 and was appointed Principal in 2022. He holds a Bachelor's degree in education, the National Professional Qualification for Headship (NPQH), and is a Level 2 qualified school inspector — a credential that informs the school's rigorous internal self-evaluation culture. Under his leadership, AABA became Al Ain's first school to receive an Outstanding rating from British Schools Overseas (BSO), a distinction awarded in the 2023 BSO inspection. He also facilitates the NPQ programme to train the next generation of school leaders across the UAE, signalling a leadership culture that looks beyond its own walls.
The wider leadership team is experienced and credentialled. Head of Primary Jasmine Jones holds a first-class degree and has completed her National Professional Qualification for Senior Leadership, having progressed through teaching and middle leadership roles at AABA itself — a signal of internal talent development. Head of Secondary Mairead Ralph holds an NPQH and brings over nine years of pastoral leadership experience in the UAE. Deputy Head of Primary Steven Drinkwater has been at AABA for ten years, a tenure that speaks directly to staff retention. Deputy Headteacher of Secondary Mohammed Usman Nasir is an accredited Secondary Mastery Specialist and NCETM Professional Development Lead. The depth and longevity of this team suggest a stable, internally coherent leadership structure rather than a revolving door of senior appointments.
Teaching quality was rated Very Good across all four phases in the 2021–22 inspection, with both teaching and assessment sub-indicators scoring Very Good consistently from Foundation Stage through to post-16. The school employs 69 teachers supported by 19 teaching assistants, producing a student-to-teacher ratio of 1:12 — meaningfully better than the city index average of 1:13.6 across Abu Dhabi private schools, and a figure that translates to more individual attention per child. Teacher nationalities are recorded as UK, consistent with the British curriculum offer.
Parent engagement was rated Outstanding by ADEK inspectors, supported by structures including a School Governance Group, the Friends of Al Ain British Academy community group, a dedicated Parent Relations Executive, and regular open days and school tours. This is not a school where parental involvement is an afterthought. One area parents should note: the most recent ADEK inspection dates to 2021–22, meaning the current picture relies partly on the 2023 BSO inspection and the school's own self-evaluation. A fresh Irtiqaa cycle would provide more current external validation of what is, by most indicators, a well-led institution.
