GEMS World Academy, founded in 2008 and operated by GEMS Education, is led by CEO/Principal Heath Monk, who joined from The British School in the Netherlands, where he served as CEO from 2020. A former Deputy Schools Commissioner at the UK Department for Education and Chief Executive of the Future Leaders Trust, Monk holds a First Class degree in English Language and Literature from Oxford University — a leadership pedigree that is notably strong even by international school standards. One important note for prospective parents: the KHDA's most recent inspection, conducted in October 2023, recorded the principal as Saima Rana (appointed 1 August 2020), suggesting a leadership transition has occurred since that inspection. Parents should confirm the current leadership structure directly with the school.

The broader senior team is deep and experienced. Secondary Principal Robert Jennings brings over twenty years of Dubai-based international education experience, with an MBA from the University of Melbourne. Primary Principal Peter Bonner has been at GWA since August 2017, holding dual Master's degrees in Educational Leadership and Professional Practice — a signal of meaningful internal continuity at the primary level. The assistant principal tier spans curriculum, assessment, pastoral care, and teaching and learning across both campuses, providing structural depth that many schools of this size lack.

The KHDA's 2023–2024 inspection rated overall leadership effectiveness Very Good, with governance rated Very Good and management, staffing, facilities and resources rated Outstanding. The governing board is described as committed and supportive. Inspectors noted efficient day-to-day management and high-quality resources as formal highlights. Self-evaluation processes, however, were flagged as not yet fully developed — an area the leadership team is actively working to strengthen.

Teaching quality is strongest in KG, where teaching for effective learning was rated Outstanding, and in English and science across all phases. Inspectors noted that teaching is more variable in Islamic Education, Arabic, and mathematics — subjects where consistency remains a stated improvement priority. The school employs 188 teachers supported by 104 teaching assistants and 9 guidance counsellors, serving 2,022 students. This yields a student-to-teacher ratio of approximately 1:10.8, meaningfully more favourable than the Dubai-wide average of 1:13.6 across all 204 schools with available ratio data — and particularly notable among IB curriculum schools. Parent engagement is a genuine strength. Parents and Community was rated Outstanding in the 2023–2024 inspection — the highest rating available and one of only two Outstanding sub-ratings GWA received. Inspectors specifically highlighted parental involvement as a key contributor to raising standards. The school supports this through a dedicated parent lounge, weekly newsletters, and regular coffee mornings. The wellbeing inspection rated provision Very Good overall, with inspectors noting high staff morale and a positive school atmosphere — an indirect but meaningful signal of staff retention and culture. GWA has held a Very Good KHDA rating for six consecutive inspection cycles dating back to 2017–2018, demonstrating sustained institutional stability that places it among the stronger performers across Dubai's 40 IB curriculum schools, of which only 10 hold an Outstanding rating.
