Emirates National Schools - Al Nahyan operates a distinctive dual-framework academic program that sets it apart from most American curriculum schools in Abu Dhabi. The core academic diet follows American Common Core Standards in English, Mathematics, and Science, layered with the UAE Ministry of Education programme for Arabic, Islamic Education, and UAE Social Studies. Crucially, the school is also an authorized IB World School, offering both the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) and the IB Diploma Programme (IBDP) — a combination that gives secondary students access to one of the most internationally recognized pre-university qualifications available. A US High School Diploma pathway runs alongside the IBDP, providing families with a choice of exit credential. The school holds dual accreditation from AdvancED and the IB Organization, reflecting its commitment to international academic standards.

The 2023-24 ADEK inspection rated ENS Al Nahyan Good overall — a meaningful step up from its previous Acceptable rating — placing it among the 22 out of 42 American curriculum schools in Abu Dhabi rated Good, and above the 16 rated only Acceptable. Inspectors found student achievement to be good across English, Mathematics, Science, and UAE Social Studies in both Cycle 2 and Cycle 3. The IB Diploma English Grade 12 external assessment produced outstanding attainment, a genuine high point. However, the picture is more complicated when external benchmarks are applied. TIMSS Grade 8 scores of 383 in Mathematics and 370 in Science both fall below the low international benchmark of 475 — a significant gap that internal assessment data, which shows most students attaining above curriculum standards, does not fully reflect. PISA results showed reading literacy at 414 against a school target of 398 (exceeded), mathematics literacy at 411 against a target of 412 (narrowly missed), and scientific literacy at 404 against a target of 426 (notably below target). NWEA MAP results across Grades 6–10 are weak overall, though inspectors acknowledged an improving academic growth trend over three consecutive cycles — a distinction parents should weigh carefully.

Subject-level performance is uneven in ways that matter for families. Arabic as a first language and Islamic Education both remain at Acceptable for attainment and progress — the only two subjects below Good — and the EMSAT 2022-23 results showed only 9% of students reaching high proficiency in Arabic, with the majority at medium proficiency. IB Diploma Mathematics and Science Grade 12 results showed weak attainment, a concern for families considering the IBDP pathway for university entry into STEM disciplines. Inspectors specifically flagged that higher-attaining and gifted and talented students are not consistently stretched, particularly in Arabic and Islamic Education.

Specialist provision includes a Gifted and Talented program, a Students of Determination (SEN) stream serving 17 enrolled students, and the Let's Read programme — a structured reading intervention tied directly to individual NWEA MAP reading scores. Three dedicated library spaces, including a specialized IB Diploma library, support reading across both English and Arabic curricula. The student-to-teacher ratio of 1:16 is slightly above the Abu Dhabi average of 13.6, meaning class sizes are somewhat larger than the city norm, though still within a manageable range. Areas formally flagged for improvement by ADEK inspectors include embedding ICT across all subjects, expanding the qualified SEN team, aligning the school development plan more closely with self-evaluation, and acting on approved facility refurbishment plans — all of which remain works in progress as of the 2023-24 inspection cycle.
