Curriculum & Academics
Australian School of Abu Dhabi offers one of Abu Dhabi's most distinctive academic pathways: the full IB continuum, spanning the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) in Elementary, the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) in Middle School, and the IB Diploma Programme (DP) in Grades 11 and 12. This makes ASAD one of only two schools in Abu Dhabi offering the complete PYP–MYP–DP sequence, a meaningful differentiator in a city where most IB-affiliated schools offer only the Diploma at senior level. The curriculum is delivered in English, with Arabic as a language of instruction for Islamic Education, Arabic Language, and UAE Social Studies — subjects taught in line with Ministry of Education requirements from KG through Grade 12. French is offered as an elective at secondary level.
The school's pedagogical identity is rooted in inquiry-based learning, transdisciplinary thinking, and the IB Learner Profile. Inspectors noted a strong commitment to the IB philosophy emphasising inquiry-based learning and critical thinking, most visibly in the Phase 4 Diploma Programme, where science attainment and progress were both rated Very Good — the school's highest subject-level outcome. This Phase 4 performance represents a genuine academic strength and a credible preparation for university entry. Support programs include EAL provision, Students of Determination support, and a general inclusion framework, though inspectors flagged that identification of students with additional needs remains inconsistent and gifted and talented provision lacks systematic challenge.
The 2024–25 ADEK inspection rated ASAD Good overall — an improvement from its previous Acceptable rating — placing it among the majority of IB schools in Abu Dhabi, where 10 of 40 IB curriculum schools hold a Good rating and 15 hold Very Good or Outstanding. The upgrade reflects genuine progress: student learning skills improved from Acceptable to Good across Phases 1–3, science attainment rose across multiple phases, and Arabic-medium subject progress improved school-wide. Grade 12 MoE external exams in both Islamic Education and Arabic Language recorded Outstanding attainment in AY2023/24, demonstrating particular strength in the school's Arabic-medium programme.
However, the picture in English-medium subjects and international benchmarks is more challenging. MAP assessments in AY2023/24 rated English reading and mathematics attainment as Very Weak or Weak across Phases 2 and 3. In PISA 2022, students scored 355.85 in reading, 386.5 in mathematics, and 386 in science — all substantially below the PISA international averages of 476, 472, and 485 respectively. TIMSS 2023 results showed Grade 4 mathematics at 425.94 and Grade 8 mathematics at 430.78, both below international averages of 503 and 478. Mathematics attainment remains Acceptable across Phases 1–3, and inspectors specifically identified word-problem fluency and higher-order challenge as areas requiring urgent attention.
Compared to peer IB schools in Abu Dhabi — where the median annual fee for IB curriculum schools is AED 65,097 — ASAD's fees starting from AED 15,600 position it as the most accessible IB option in the emirate by a considerable margin. This affordability is a genuine community asset, particularly for the school's predominantly Emirati student body (347 of 608 students are Emirati). Yet the gap between fee positioning and academic outcomes relative to higher-fee IB peers remains a concern parents should weigh carefully. Inspectors recommended expanding subject choice for older students, improving differentiated teaching across phases, and strengthening self-evaluation and governance — both of which remain rated Acceptable. The school is working toward a fourth ADEK IRTIQAA star, and the trajectory from Acceptable to Good in one inspection cycle suggests leadership is moving in the right direction, but significant ground remains to be covered.
