Superintendent Monique Flickinger leads the American Community School of Abu Dhabi at the helm of one of the most credentialed leadership teams in Abu Dhabi's international school sector. Flickinger brings more than 20 years of teaching and leadership experience across the United States, Canada, Costa Rica and Panama, and holds a Bachelor's in Mathematics, a Master's in Education from the University of Victoria, a Certificate of Teaching and Leading from Harvard University, and is completing a doctorate at the University of Wyoming. She is supported by a deep bench of division principals — Jonathan Mueller (ES Principal), Karl Poulin (MS Principal), and Kathy Mackay (HS Principal) — each holding master's degrees and carrying 15 or more years of international school experience. The school is governed as an independent non-profit, overseen by a volunteer, elected Board of Trustees that approved a new Strategic Plan in September 2025, signalling structured long-term planning rather than reactive management.
ADEK's most recent inspection, conducted in May 2023, rated leadership effectiveness Outstanding and self-evaluation and improvement planning Outstanding — the two highest-stakes leadership indicators in the framework. Governance was rated Very Good, one tier below Outstanding, representing the one area where leadership has room to close the gap. Among the 42 American curriculum schools in Abu Dhabi, ACS stands as the only one rated Outstanding by ADEK, a distinction that underscores the rarity of its leadership performance within its curriculum peer group. The school has held an Outstanding overall rating in three of its last four inspections, including consecutive Outstanding ratings in 2021–22 and 2022–23, demonstrating sustained rather than episodic excellence.
Teaching quality is a clear strength. The ADEK inspection rated teaching and assessment Outstanding in Middle and High School phases and Very Good in Elementary and KG — a profile that holds up well across the full age range. ACS reports that 67% of teachers hold advanced degrees and that staff average more than 10 years of teaching experience. The school's student-to-teacher ratio of 1:10 is significantly more favourable than the Abu Dhabi city average of 1:13.6 across all private schools, meaning students at ACS benefit from meaningfully more individual teacher attention than the norm. With 112 teachers serving 1,315 students, the staffing model reflects a deliberate investment in instructional capacity.
Parent engagement was rated Outstanding by ADEK inspectors, the highest possible mark, supported by an active PTA described as fostering inclusion and community, and an open-door campus tour programme running three days a week. The school's mission — empowering students to define and shape their futures for learning, service and global citizenship — is visibly embedded across its four-pillar programme of Academics, Arts, Athletics and Service Learning, giving leadership's stated values an operational structure that inspectors and parents can observe directly.
