AISA offers an American curriculum, tied to the demanding Common Core State Standards in English and math and the AERO (American Education Reaching Out) standards in other subjects. AISA is also an International Baccalaureate World School, offering the IB Primary Years Program (PYP) and the IB Diploma Program (DP). These IB programs are student-centered and inquiry-based. All students in KG1 to grade 5 are enrolled in the PYP. More details can be found on the elementary school pages. In grades 6 to 9, AISA’s curriculum follows best international practice, while being linked to US standards. In grade 10, students can choose to start working towards the IB Diploma, with and IB Prep year in grade 10 followed by the IBDP itself in grades 11 and 12. Those who choose not to do the IBDP can work towards a regular US High School Diploma.
Elementary School
The Primary Years Program is an inquiry-based, transdisciplinary learning program designed by the International Baccalaureate Organization for 3-12 year olds. The Program of Inquiry for each grade is based on six units connected to transdisplinary themes. All elementary school subjects are incorporated into this program of inquiry. Our program is aligned to the U.S. Common Core State Standards for English language arts and math and American Education Reaches Out (AERO) standards for science and social studies.
Middle School
AISA Middle School is grades 6, 7 snd 8. Boys and girls receive instruction in separate classes
Core courses include English, Humanities, Math and Science. We follow the Common Core States Standards (CCSS) from the United States. Students will receive daily instruction in all core subjects.
Students will read a variety of literature for English and Humanities. The goal is for our learners to read and analyze a wide variety of complex texts. Similarly, our students will learn how to express their thoughts using different forms of writing. Literacy will be emphasized across all core subjects, including Math and Science. Listening and speaking will be emphasized through group discussions and presentations. Students will receive opportunities to practice these skills during all core subjects.Math and Science will involve inquiry-based learning. As we move to CCSS a greater emphasis will be placed on explaining how and why a student arrives at an answer or conclusion. Our math and science program will challenge students and build their metacognition skills (thinking about thinking).
All core subjects will focus on big ideas, essential skills and understandings. Students will work on skills such as critical thinking, research, problem-solving and cooperative learning.
